Default Let's try asking a question then...

Apparently this bit of the forum is for asking Guitarist people about stuff. So let's ask a question and see if/when there is an answer.

I read the Guitarist rave review of the H&K Switchblade and it sounded great so I bought one. I find the distorted rhythm sounds very good, but the clean sounds and leads sounds are a bit weak. Did any of the Guitarist staff buy one? If so what settings do they use and have they had any problems with it? Thanks.

Nice attitude you have, Mike. Sorry I wasn't around on Sunday to answer your question.

I wrote the review of the Switchblade and I didn't come across any problems with it at all - really!

I honestly didn't think the clean sounds were weak, but it obviously depends on what you mean by 'weak'. You can of course program loads of different settings in there, and by adding chorus, reverb and so on you can sweeten up those sounds easily.

The three overdrive channels seemed to us to have plently of low end should you want it...maybe you could explain further what you mean and I'll try to help.

Simon - Thanks for the response. I'm often working at weekends so I forget that others don't!

Actually I gigged the Switchblade again over the weekend and it sounded much better - I cranked the gain to max (where the boost kicks in - this is one of the few heads that sounds good with max gain, rather than going too OTT), pushed the mids up and pulled back on the treble and bass. It sounded great, although I still can't get nice clean sounds when the master volume is right up. It cut through well and the convenience of not needing all my pedals (except tuner and wah) was a big benefit. However I've heard that there are some reliability problems with this head, so fingers crossed that it doesn't go wrong on me. I won't be selling my Dual Recto or 5150 but, for the convenience factor, this H&K is pretty damn good. Thanks for the review that pointed me in this direction.

    Mike

I've got a Switchblade too, and I'm finding that at anything around rehearsal volume (master 3-4), it's creating a low woofing feedback until I back off the guitar volume to about 7.
Have you experienced this at all? I'm just wondering if it's my close proximity to the amp??

    cheers

Errr if it's what I think you're talking about, it's just what loud amps do.

yeah I know, but it's not a "nice" feedback", and I'm not exactly diming the master volume.

I've gigged the Switchblade twice now - running the master volume at 6 and (for solos) the channel volume at 10. No feedback problems at all. However both times I was in a large room and playing about 10 feet away from the amp.

The only problem I'm having is that I'm convinced the sounds are changing while I'm playing. It's like the volume is shaking the amp or something and making the controls move. Bizarre!
