    Default strum patterns

Know of any good books or websites on different strum patterns?

I find it really hard to come up with strum patterns, surely there must be a resource to help me out

    Cheers

Tell you what to check out instead... David Mead's 'Rhythm' book. It'll teach you how to read rhythms, but also includes tonnes on really useful ones. If that's a bit intense (and it's not... reads very easily), I don't know what else off the top of my head. I'm pretty crap with this sort of stuff, but rhythm is what I really will be focusing on at some stage. I fond it hard to do really fast strumming, like that Vai tune, the God eaters or whatever. Just do whatever! Put in your ghost strums, fit 5s etc into 4/4 etc, put in the occasional, fast, triple strum. Don't know what else! Something I've not realy focused on much!

Just had a look at that book on Amazon, but I don't think it's really what I'm after at this stage.

Just felt there ought to be a book of strum patterns, much like there are books of chord progressions.

    Cheers though, Thomas.

I'd be interested in strumming pattern tips too. In fact, I was going to post this very same topic the other day.

I've only got one, and I just make it fit round any tune I play. ops:

I'm aware of several DVD's for bluegrass and folk rythym playing that I guess would include strumming patterns, but I'm guessing they're not your thing
None of you seem to understand; I'm not locked in here with you, you'll all locked in here with me.

On acoustic I had twice as many strumming patterns until fairly recently as it happens. I got out of the rut with a copy of a DVD by Jamie Humphries called "Acoustic Rock" -- it's really just how to play:

    "Yellow" - Coldplay
    "One" - U2
"High & Dry" and "Karma Police" - Radiohead
    "Babylon" - David Gray
    "Losing My Religion" - REM
    "Wildwood" - Paul Weller
    and "Sing" - Travis

But it's all straight-forward and easy to follow. A couple of those songs are now my party pieces if someone says, "Go on, play something then." Basically, I got a lot of confidence (hopefully not misguided) by learning how to strum along to these tunes.

I suppose it all came down to practice in the end but this DVD just sort of pushed the right buttons for me. (Funnily enough I was about to return it to Musicroom because it doesn't play on my DVD drive, then I decided to rip it as a last resort and that plays fine. Go figure!).

imho Tom is on to something here - it's not a list/books of strumming patterns that's needed, but some rhythmic joinedupness between brain and arm so that whatever rhythm your hear in your head it can be pumped out on the guitar.

I decided to get myself some rhythm study material with any Chrimbo money recently and had picked out this :

but that David Mead book looks good too. I think it's about internalising some rhythm playing/techniques rather than learning 20 strumming patterns and trying to recall one. Just imo.

But to answer your question I did just find this on Amazon:

    Red ones are better.

Thanks, Tim. I've just ordered that last book, as it was only £4.50 on Marketplace.

    I'll see if that helps!
