No short cuts I'm afraid... . One of the frustrating things about teaching is that studes don't appreciate that it's a life long thing they're starting. I get no end of (especially adult) studes who can't understand why they're not playing like Vai after 6 months. Even Vai wasn't playing like Vai after 6 months.

I must admit... I thought it sounded horrible at first... But if you keep playing and listening, I guess you can hear what's going on and really start to appreciate it. I love Vai's output now! However, I still love good old rock and roll.

    How to improve guitar solos:

Cut them right down to the absolute minimum. You're making music for people not guitarists. Most people don't really care about solos. People will cheer the most hackneyed and tired Jimmy Page thing because they feel the groove and think they know Page is good. Not for any reasons of actual solo appreciation.

If you must solo extendedly, make sure it is in an interesting and rule-challenging manner ref: Michael Karoli, Tom Verlaine, Jimi Hendrix.

Try not to think about them too much. Better to have a clichéd thing that flows naturally than a mannered and clunky bit of composition that tries too hard.

When it comes to solos, the sound and feel are more important than the notes. Far, far more important.

Soloig is actually about rhythm, not the individual notes you play.

    +1billion

Still, working in grace notes between the chords is a skill I've yet to master. And my solos sound dull and uninspired. This will change in 2007.

For once, I agree with Goji!!
In fact, prior to him saying this, my songs have been getting simpler and simpler and more 'heartful' in an attempt to become songs that are enjoyable and one can maybe even dance to!

I just try my best to play what I'd like to listen to myself Tom, you're an odd one.
