Its not the music quality that makes gigs worthwhile, its the reaction you get from the punters, and the atmosphere. I used to think the same as yourself when I played in shred gigs, but I get it now! plus we don't do too many gigs, maybe once a month.

What songs get you the most reaction?? It seems round here different pubs = different songs, but mainly down to the age of the clientelle....

    Out of my Lot:

I love rock and roll by Joan Jett - Goes down a feckin storm in a pub better then any other cover I've played in various bands.... It even topples stuff like Sweet Child of Mine round my way.

    Chelsea Dagger
    Whole lotta Rosie
You shook me all night long
Should I stay or should I go
    Sex on fire
Suffragette City - Although not everyone knows it, it just gets the whole place rocking and everyone loves the "wham bham thank you mam" and "Sufffffffrrrragette" at the end.

thats one that works for us too - I love rocknroll / paranoid / bad reputation and then into a zepellin medley (heartbreaker / whole lot of love / rock n roll - that way I dont have to learn 25 minute solos)

Stuck In The Middle - Stealers' Wheel
    All Right Now - Free
    500 Miles - Proclaimers
Let's Stick Together - Roxy Music

Very obvious, but they do go down very well.

One which surprises me how well it goes down if we play it is Old Time Rock 'n' Roll by Bob Seger. I wouldn't say it's especially good or well known but it seems to hit the spot.

On the other hand though, the other guitarist & bassist in my band came from the era where a few 'slow songs' were the done thing. I've found that except for a few rare occasions, the slow songs can kill an atmosphere stone dead...

in my old band we did that, went over well.

For slow songs depends on the audience. If its basically a seated one then i think as much variety as possible.
For the current band we get a fair amount of people dancing so even a slow intro, too long a chat between songs, having to repair the drum kit (!),etc, can lose the audience.
