Default production help - NOW WITH VOCALS

    Hi All

Tell me to sod off if this is too much work, but I was wondering if you could help me learn some production skills.

As you may or may not know, I'm trying to record 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' for my Mum (all say 'ahhhhhhhhhhhh'), and it struck me that this may be a good opportunity to pick your brains as far as making it sound good is concerned.

Bezzer very kindly did a backing track for me, so that bits fine, but I have now added a rhythm track and would like to know how to improve the sound of it etc. I've added some reverb and compression so far, so help me tweak it if you can be bothered! Also, any guitar playing, timing issues are fair game too!

    Here's the track:
    IWHYH Rhythm Only

If this is a goer, maybe it'll help other folk too.

    Cheers.

I'd be interested in having a listen

Just had an idea, would you be up for putting all the seperate tracks up? and having a bit of a forum production thingy?

Be interested to see how everyone does it differently

A great idea, but I currently only have the backing track and rhythm part. Not sure when I'll get round to the lead bits and the vocals. I thought doing a track at a time I could get the production better on each track and learn that way. I'd be more than happy to let people have a mess with it when I eventually get the other tracks done. It'd be a great learning experience all round.

Have you done any equalisation? Here's a rough guide to the frequencies:

    50 - 100Hz: Bass/warmth/kick. Can be a problem area with boomy/muddy frequencies.

100 - 500Hz: Low mid. Generaly a bit woolly and in my opinion not nice.

500 - 2kHz: Middle, most things around here, good for boosting clarity.

2k - 5kHz: High mids, these give presence and sound sweet. Good for boosting on electric guitar parts.

5kHz+ Top, airy frequencies. Can add "space" to a recording.

As always it's good to mess about to your own taste. And never underestimate the power of EQ!

clare - are you using Tracktion ?

If you are, try just recording each of your tracks cleanly and with good levels before messing about with them.

Then spend a little time getting the relative levels about right, then, and here's the Tracktion specific bit, use FinalMix on the output bus (drag the filter to the area bottom right of the screen) and step through some of the presets - just that can make a world of difference. and it can be a learning experience as when you hit on something suitable you can see all the EQ and compression settings.

I'm terrible for faffing with the overall sound before I have recorded all teh tracks - it's a distraction and a bad habit I am trying to break
    Red ones are better.

I have thus far been unable to get the track successfully to Bezzer, so this thread seems a little pointless at the moment - sorry!

Thanks for the generic tips though. I have recorded clean and at what I consider reasonable levels, but that's where I need some help really! (I am using Tracktion, timmyo).
