Default An ambient piece. No, really!

We were given a couple of vocal and piano samples to have a go at self-generative music today, Music For Airports stylee.

Obviously I had no interest in boring old ambience so I dropped in some bitcrushing and distortion and a bunch of my own recent contact mic recordings. Actually came out kind of interesting!

I like it. Very clever use of random 'stuff'

A little bit of tape delay and reverb here and there would work as well I think.

Must get me some portable mic'ing!

    Cheers dudes.

This was literally thrown together in about 20 minutes as I wasn't really interested in doing it at all to begin with, but I think this sort of thing could be an interesting diversion from my other stuff. I'm gonna go back into this track and replace the piano and vocal samples with my own stuff and see what I can do. I might have a go at a little ambient EP... Never thought I'd ever say that!

Really cool track man, really enjoyed listening to it.
love the creative use of everyday background sound that you used throughout the piece.
Well done, if you decide to do that ambient EP post some stuff on here to listen to, i'd be interested to hear it.

    Cheers fella.

Thanks a lot James, appreciate the comments. I'm definitely going to expand on this idea, it's kind of liberating to be able to work free of the contraints of timing and musical theory.

Just in case anyone wondered, the samples are contact microphone recordings of:

    A basketball court fence
An outdoor treadmill with my mate running on it
An outdoor excercise bike creaking back and forth
A metal pole with my mate banging on it with his hand by the Thames
    The Millenium Bridge!

I figure it's always good to try your hands at lots of different stuff, it can only possibly be a positive thing. I've had an idea since before Christmas to do a sort of EP purely using sounds gathered with the contact mic, and this'll be the perfect vehicle for that...

    Repeating my SC comment here:

I like the texture a lot. I think I'll put it on repeat and go to sleep on it, just to see what kind of dreams I have.

Just a thought, man, but this is crying out for a nautical theme behind it. You could sell it as the theme for the next johnny Depp eyepatch movie. Creaking timbers, moving textures, wierd background. Not bad at all.
