Default Phil Collins packs it in, apologizes for success

    http://www.avclub.com/articles/phil-...-succes,52740/

While he laments that he annoyed so many people with his most recent outings, the writer of this article points out the respect he earned in his earlier work, especially with Genesis.

He sounds a bit fed up, easy to see why because the health problems simply ended his ability to drum.

Interesting what he said, "It's hardly surprising that people grew to hate me. I'm sorry that it was all so successful. I honestly didn't mean it to happen like that." I believe him. And he's nailed it -- it was because he was the "soundtrack to shallow yuppie self-reflection" (as the journalist put it) that I really can't stand [EDIT] his songs out of all proportion to their actual quality, i.e. the songs are probably OK; just heard them too many times and they have that whole nasty Thatcher years taint to them.

I just got to hear his voice too much. Him, and Annie Lennox.

I've always liked the guy. There's nothing offensive about him. I find it sad that certain artists get labelled by the music press as 'naff' and all the 'dedicated followers of fashion' bleat out the same line for fear of having to make their own minds up about something, or worse...far, far worse, ..risking being seen to be unfashionable themselves by expressing a liking for an 'unfashionable' artist. Bon Jovi is another victim of this complaisant and vacuous mentality.

Fuck 'em I say. Collins and BonJovi are alreet in my book.

I'd like to make it clear that I don't like Collins or Jovi's music. It matters to me not one jot what anyone else thinks of them.

Bon Jovi. I didn't like them at first, but when I got into a cover band that insisted on doing several of thier songs I saw something that helped me get over it and really listen to them. What happened was at every gig when we played one of thier songs everybody sang along and the whole place seemed to elevate. I kid you not. I still don't like some of thier songs but have a new respect for them. Status Quo has always been alright in my books, and yeah, Peter Gabriel era Genesis was where I became a fan of all the members of the band.
