Mind you, it's not something I could really listen to for pleasure... nasty tone and the execution is a bit messy (not that anyone could blame him, given the enormity of what he's actually doing there :shock. It's just *so* difficult, it ends up being more of a one-off eye-opener than something I could listen to repeatedly.

Yup, while watching The Promise - from the Piano (one I rather hoped to do)

It struck me that the timing was wrong, there was no dynamic and the tone was god-awful weak. Made me decide that this is not the kind of guitar that I want to play... which is rather a big jump in thought for me. As I rather like Stanley Jordan.. but Jordan has tone and dynamics... perhaps it's possible to do this stuff well but I don't know if I'd want to risk sounding like that.

Yes I agree. I would extend it even to people like Tommy Emmanuel. Amazing player, very good arranger but they all feel like part pieces to me at the end of the day, quite seperate from actual pieces of music.

It's funny because I can listen to someone like Metheny, Towner, Krantz et al do a solo guitar piece and it feels like music. I can't really say why that is...

As part of a collective challenge I did a version of the Sweeny theme tune in a Santana style available exclusively from my Soundclick page in the link below for a limited period (and the last four years or so...)
