Has anyone heard the parts on knights of cydonia where he sings a melody while tremolo picking a harmony on his guitar? That's an amazing bit of music. Also the solo of invincible is pretty cool, tapping whammy pedal stuff.

For someone with the alias 'hairmetal' I wouldn't find it surprising that you like EVH more than Muse :P

Van Halen had great solos, there's no doubt about that but in my opinion their songs overall were nothing special. I only listen to them for the solos.

Muse write real involving music. The kind of music that you have to listen to, every little sound and noise makes the songs complete. Matt's use of the guitar makes him one of the most innovative guitar players because he uses it in ways that most people would never think of.

I love it when people say the guitar in Muse sucks, they learn the riffs to Plug in Baby and think they're as good as Matt, but see him live and you'll see what sets him apart from other guitarists.

To sum up, I think TG had it right, EVH was innovative in that he spawned shredding and dive-bomb use. Listen to Matt's work though, he can do all that and more, but in small doses. I definitely think he's one of the best guitarists out there at the moment, and he's still young, there could easily be a few more decades worth of music in him.

I pretty much agree with the last post. I've got four VH albums, but to be honest, what really great songs have they done? Lots of flashy guitar work, but what about the songs.

Also Matt Bellamy has never had a guitar solo upstaged by a keyboard solo.

    +1

Van Halen wrote some good songs as well like Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love and Panama but on the other hand they wrote Jump

The Invincible solo is definitely not as easy as it sounds!

    Another "Salvador Dali" influenced thread.

What kind of conversation is this?

Is a broad range of music even comparable in the first place?

Why don't we just appreciate all this stuff on it's own merits and abandon the whole concept of artistic or technical comparison?

You want to look at who is Van Halens successor?

Who did Van Halen succeed in the first place? Hendrix?

Eddie does what Eddie does. Matt Bellamy does what Matt Bellamy does. Why does this need a discussion?

I really love Muse, and I really love Van Halen. To think that I might compare them seems such a stupid thing to do with no productive merit or end product that may have any value.

Am I on my own here?

Nope, I think you are dead right. It's very difficult to compare two excellent guitarists and say that one is definitely better than the other. As far as the bands go, again difficult to compare. All I can judge is that at the moment, I'm more likely to choose a Muse song to listen to on my mp3 player than a Van Halen one... but again that's just an expression of personal taste.

Agreed, like them both, but find Muse more addictive.
