Nope, I think you are dead right. It's very difficult to compare two excellent guitarists and say that one is definitely better than the other. As far as the bands go, again difficult to compare. All I can judge is that at the moment, I'm more likely to choose a Muse song to listen to on my mp3 player than a Van Halen one... but again that's just an expression of personal taste.
Agreed, like them both, but find Muse more addictive.
What I think I would like to hear and explore, probably more than their guitar wizardry, is their similarities and/or differences as concert pianists. Eddie Van Halen and Matt Bellamy are both highly accomplished piano players!

What kind of conversation is this?

Is a broad range of music even comparable in the first place?

Why don't we just appreciate all this stuff on it's own merits and abandon the whole concept of artistic or technical comparison?

You want to look at who is Van Halens successor?

Who did Van Halen succeed in the first place? Hendrix?

Eddie does what Eddie does. Matt Bellamy does what Matt Bellamy does. Why does this need a discussion?

I really love Muse, and I really love Van Halen. To think that I might compare them seems such a stupid thing to do with no productive merit or end product that may have any value.

No. I said the exact same thing 2nd post. But people are just feeding the matter even more.

Muse have more good songs, but I think Van Halen's bestest are better than Muse's bestest. That's what I think and you can't stop me.

I believe that it is correct to say it's strange and a waste of time to compare guitarists. Most of the time, the two guitarists compared are equally good in there own right.

It's like reading youtube comments: "Yngwie had no soul, Gilbert beats Hendrix any day, Jason Becker owns Dimebag!". Aaargh!! It always annoys me.

And now this: Eddie vs. Bellamy.. it never ends..

But people.. i am going to disappoint you all. Eddie van Halen is my all-time favourite guitar hero and matthew bellamy is somebody I hate with a passion.

so here i go... EDDIE OWNS BELLAMY BIG TIME!!

Muse - because the bass is better.

I think steve vai put it very well in this months tg ''people tell me im the best guitar player, i thank them but try and correct them by saying there is no 'best' guitarist'' or something like that anyway.

1 - HOW can anyone say that Matt Bellamy is not as influential as EVH cos he has not influenced as many people? EVH has had like a 20 year headstart, it's just not a fair test!! They are both great innovators, both extremely talented and both hugely influential.

2 - Surely it's all irrelevant anyway... music is an artform, and thus, by definition there is no right or wrong, and no good or bad, just different and different... sure everyone is entitled to their own opinion and they are entitled to their subjective opinion as to who/what is best, but that doesn't mean they are right!

Personally I much prefer Muse as a band to Van Halen, though I can entirely appreciate both as excellent musicians and instrumentalists, but you can't say one is better than the other.... and I think you'll find that in the article in question TG didn't say anything like that either!

Agreed, but that's pretty much the point. Suppose that there's a guitarist called Bob Bobson who's just picked up his first Squier Strat, but will be remembered in 3000 years' time. Right now, who's more influential, Bob or Mr Hendrix?
