True Dave but valve amps, especially used ones, are not that expensive. It is possible to put together a very decent hi-fi system [using Chinese made valve amp.] for the price of a Fender Strat. Quad 11s are selling for a couple of hundred quid a pair. They sound sweet and seem to work forever but modern valve amps leave them for dead sound wise. But in saying that, a pair of Quads are still a great basis for a quality sound system. And they will work with Metallica as well as they do with Bach if you have the right speakers.
