Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs - Meh, it's alright. Kinda funny.

Drive - Very good. Tried to not like Ryan Gosling for some reason, but he's excellent. I thought it was very much like an 80s De Niro style film

Thought Drive was ok, Ryan Gosling is a bit wooden IMO. Great soundtrack though
I'm fed up with people joking about dyslexia. It's not big and it's not furry.

Probably the first to post this one... on this forum at least.

    Prometheus (3D IMAX edition).

    Visually - 10/10
    Aurally - 11/10 - F***ing loud!
    Artistically - 6/10 - Hmm

    Visuals
First off, visually this film was stunning in every possible way. Some little touches here and there were both beautiful and breath-takingly awesome in their attention to detail - right the way down to the androids fingerprint being something worthy of inspection. The sets were so close to the feel of the original that ship design, architecture and feel of locations match brilliantly with the original - Ridley Scott has clearly treated us to his vision.

There is a slight problem in my mind though with the awesome-ness of the sets. While the outer ship-design, and inner architecture of the human ship are close enough in feel to that of Alien to seem like different ship models from the same spaceship manufacturer which is brilliant, there is a technological gap. In the original Alien "Mother" was so clunky that we probably have more processing power in our mobile phones... so given the modern-day geek requirements for space tech the new stuff doesn't match what we see in the supposedly following films. You could argue that Alien is set on an industrial ship which would logically be clunky and dirty - fine, but that only goes so far with some things. In the late 70's when Scott was creating his vision technology was less spaceage than it is now... Starwars had the same tech-gap... prequels over this gap in time will likely always suffer like this - but it's slightly jarring it's that big a gap.

    Aural
The sound is epic in an IMAX screen. So much so that when The Prometheus was landing the bass felt like some sort of engine backwash blasting out from the screen.
Some things are loud... everything is awesome.
What I can remember of the music I remember as awesome. Scott always pays plenty of attention to sountracks and this was no exception.

    Art
So... Fox has been ruthlessly strict on its Alien property. Games designers have been told what CAN and what CAN'T go into cut-scenes or narratives. The integrity of their intellectual property has been held sacred since Alien. Ridley Scott demands total autonomy in creating a film. So something has to give... Canon or Vision...

It's canon that gets thrown out...

The Alien franchise comprises films, comics, novels, computer games and probably more... So whenever something is released eggshells must be walked upon.

Not so in the new film. I can't say what without spoiling things, but several things don't add up to origin stories in novels... that's fine as most wont have been near the novels... one particular thing stuck out in my head as not fitting with something in Alien, and one thing that doesn't make sense in reference to Aliens ... these aren't niche examples of canon...

Purists will hate some of the changes, but I only think they'd stick out were you to want to watch the films back to back (which I'll probably do when Prometheus comes out on disk)

But if I can accept the canonical differences why only a 6/10 for the artistry?
Well, because the film had some truly awesome and epic stuff in, the bits that weren't so awesome seemed lacking. And it didn't feel like an Alien film in the important way. It wasn't nearly as tense and prickly. Alien was a scary film that just happened to be sci-fi, Prometheus is a sci-fi film that just happens to have some scary bits

Bottom line - Did I like the film?
    Yes.
Will I watch it again - I went to a midnight showing, knowing that I'd planned to see it the next day. I'm still going to see it a second time.
Will I buy the DVD - nope. I'd buy it on bluray or if a 4K source comes out I'd get it on that. Beautiful imagery and fantastic sound... but will have to watch it as the 5th film in the alien series to minimise the plot inconsistency and tech-gap... and it's a slightly better plot than 4, so would be ending on a high note

Sadly I won't be able to comment until tomorrow.
It had better be good to beat Iron Sky though.
8/10 for an excellent black (and occasionally white) comedy. Lots of references of other movies from Star Wars to Downfall via Dr Strangelove.
    A cracker for the budget.

    The Cabin In The Woods

Absolutely brilliant. I heart Joss Whedon. I can't really elaborate without spoiling, but it's essential if you like horror and funnies or any of Whedon's stuff in the past

Couldn't agree more, absolutely great film!

I've been on a shit horror film kick lately - watched Outpost 2: Black Sun the other day, which was really quite enjoyable and featured undead unified-field-affected-so-therefore-invincible Nazis, War of The Dead last night (proper shit, not even enjoyable shite, although with decent production values), and have the main event for Sunday's hangover viewing...

Ozombie. Featuring a special forces team hunting down a zombie Bin Laden. It's going to be fucking mega.
