Django Unchained and Life of Pi , two polar opposites , but both hugely enjoyable

Django Unchained. Superb stuff. I'm a bit dubious about Tarantino's films, especially after the shitefest that was Bulletproof, but this is him at his best. Violent and witty. Some superb acting from Leonardo DiCaprio and a barely recognisable Samuel L Jackson ( think the bloke from the Uncle Bens Rice packets).

    Highly recommended.

    Django Unchained - 8/10

Excellent stuff. Jamie Foxx gets blown off screen in just about every scene he's in until the very end which is a bit crap for a protagonist, apart from that it was top notch.

    Stand Up Guys - 7/10

Saw this at a press screening - very very good light hearted comedy gangster romp. I love Pacino and Walken and they're in fine form here. Recommended

    Flight.

Wonderful, unforgettable performance from Denzel Washington. Have also seen Lincoln but if the Academy would give me a vote it would be for Denzel.

    Lincoln.

Not sure... good acting, but very 'worthy'. DDL is very convincing as Lincoln, but I felt it was as the popular caricature of Lincoln rather than the real man. Not much insight into his real character. It's long, though steadily paced and not boring, and there's a lot of detail that you need to follow if you haven't been raised on American history. Overall I didn't get a sense of 'being there' though.

Tommy Lee Jones is excellent, Hal Holbrook is good, and James Spader is fat.

    7/10.

(loved Argo... brilliant film. Simply brilliant.)

    Last Stand - 8/10

Critics seem to have been rough on this film and it's not done as well at the box office as it deserved. Sure it's stupid, sure many of the stunts wouldn't stand up to Mythbuster scrutiny, sure Arnie is now old enough to look like the Arnie-head-prosthetic from Terminator 2, but it's an 80s style action-film with 2012 style decent special effects.

    Kerplosions kerplode nicely
    Gunshots are shooty
    Cars are chasey...

There's baddies with cheesy dialogue... and while it could be construed as a spoiler - it really isn't - the Sherrif of the sleepy town just happened to be a former Elite Special SWAT trained Narcotics officer who just wanted a quiet life... clichéd yes, but it just adds to the nostalgic 80s feel.

Improbable plans, silly stunts, preposterous stuff... but all the way through - fun.

90 minutes or so of fun. Sure if you're after an oscar performance you might be dissappointed, but you're in the wrong cinema for that, this is for silly-shooty-kerplodey-fun with what seemed to be decent fake blood not the cartoon CGI shite that was all over Expendables

    Looper

Loved it. Not perfect, but intelligent enough to be interesting, without being too intelligent and losing that interest (see Primer)
