Default tips on micing a hi gain lead sound.

Hi folks, just looking for last minute tips. I'm recording my mate playing a few of his solo guitar widdly music tomorow night. We've already tried it using my amplitube program, but although it sounded ok, he was struggling to do the intricate parts as he wasn't getting the same feel off his guitar as he would if he was playing straight through his amp, everything was sounding a bit flat. So I've decided to give micing his amp a go. He gets decent enough hi gain tone from it when in the house or live, so I think the source will be ok. I've never miced an amp before so I've been checking out some youtube video's. There all good but generally for clean or slightly dirty tones. Any tips for me? I've got an sm57, and a lowish end vocal condenser.to play with.

    High gain:
57 - straight on speaker. In the middle of the cone.
Condenser - edge of the speaker, or 6-12inches back.

57 for the bite, and condenser for the body & tone.

Well Beleive it or not, when I got to my mates house, I realised I hadn't taken my sm57, so I only had my vocal condenser. I wasn't willing to drive back home to get it so I just took a dry signal through the TU-2 and miced up. It sounds ok. Not brilliant though. I'l post the results once I'm happier with the mixing. The song is a shredfest, and its a bit shit to be honest.

Something I have done though which I think is really cool, I've got two takes that were well played and panned them right and left. I'm guessing this is a standard technique but its really cool! slightly differently played, adds a bit of depth to the sound!

Oooh try quad tracking, it's the best thing ever for rhythm guitars.
