    Would powering a centre +ve pedal (Rangemaster) from one of those battery clip converters, itself chained off a centre -ve supply sidestep the grounding issue ?
    Red ones are better.

    I'm not Andi, but I don't think that would work as you'd still be connecting the PSU's +ve to it's -ve if I understand rightly

    You can set up a charge pump to give you 0v and -9v from a 0v and +9v supply, but I think Pete's right; the normal ones will have "straight-thru" ground so it won't work.
