I've just taken the plunge and got a kit on its way... so how long have I been playing? Not long - unless drunken air drumming counts. I thought it was about time, and I've always been rather jealous of my drumming buddies. Sadly my friends and the mag are based in the East, hence me asking around for teachers down here. I think I might well take the AC/DC route to learning.. Can't see that being a chore...!! Your teacher does sound fantastic... Do you learn on an acoustic kit?

I got a Mapex Pro-M fusion shellpack, 70s Ludwig Supraphonic 400 (for £80 !) , Sabian HH fusion hats, Zildjian A Custom fast crash, TRX MDM Ride (although this is going as I have a Sabian HH Medium Ride on the way that I got for £55 on eBay!), DW5000 pedal (old single chain one) and an Iron Cobra hi-hat stand. In total I spent less than the RRP of the shellpack
Not ordered any cymbals from anywhere yet... I just haven't the foggiest of what to go for/what would be right for me.

Then I'd suggest getting yourself over to www.mikedolbear.com/forum (sorry musicradar - there just isn't a critical mass over drummers on here yet . . . ) where you'll get all the advice you need and more. A fair few of them are from the Bristol area including the fella who's the main drum man at the new Bristol branch of BIMM (who I met at the IGF last year and who helped steer me through my recent purchases) but they are all a good bunch.
As a sweeping generalisation secondhand (as long as they were looked after) will get you twice the cymbal for your money.
I've got a (very good) spare ride that I'll be selling for £70-80 when my latest eBay bargain arrives next week.

I'm on Paiste 400-series hats and ride (years old, have 'made in West Germany' stamped on them), which I've had for years and love, and Zildjian ZBT crashes. They're good for the money, but get drowned out by the Paistes. I suppose if you had a full set of ZBTs it'd balance better, and you'd probably get hats, ride, a couple of crashes and a splash for less than a couple of hundred quid.
