Whilst good bassists (well John Deacon was anyway), Deacon and Waters were hardly exciting in terms of sound. Deacon's finest hours ("Under Pressure" and "Another One Bites The Dust") eschewed middy rock sounds for deep(ish) jazzy funk bass sounds.

So I'm not sure what you're saying.

    ^ ^ ^

    This man speaks the truth.

    Bass is wonderful.

There might not be any hero-worship, standing at the back of a tiny stage - but the magic feeling when you and the drummer are locked perfectly and the groove is just right... mmm

who says the bass player has to be standing at the back of the stage i sure as hell dont do that. its our duty as bass players to kill off that stigma cmon u lot do what i do (well i took my inspiration from a mr steve harris there). we have every right to grab as much of the glory as the guitarists in the band do cos lets face it what we are playing is bigger and more manly so lets use our massive instruments to beat the guitarists out the way and break into bass solos and all things bass (yes i do realise there is quite a bit of innuendo there but who cares lol)

on the other hand i do agree with u on what u said about how good it feels when the bass and drums are locked tight together

When engineering a band,.. the bass is the "easiest" part if you've got a good bass player.. a high pass filter to the guitars is required at all times to ensure the bass is heard, but usually if you've got a good player it can be the most fun to track.

Increasingly I'm finding that I like to scoop some of the mids out on the bass, and let the bass and treble come through. Gives it a really nice thwump on the low end, but still a shimmer on top.

This leaves room for the guitar too.

why would eccentuate mids on a bass? its just not logical. Also, i have never heard a mushy bass on a record before (that i can remember), bass tends to be very compressed and clean.

that is because the bassist turns up and asks the usual "Have you bought your Fender Jazz? No, have you bought the 1 other bass I have ever recorded then... a P bass? No.

Ok use one of mine then....

Amp? No need just DI it please..."

Cue loads of arguments until the bassist, for the good of the band, gives in and gets the same bass sound as everyone else that the engineer has recorded.

    bah.
