Question name a simple melody in A

Just a bit in a song where I have to do an 8 bar solo over a 8 bar vamp in A. Drives me round the bend.

Anyway, started inserting a bit of surf style open A twanging rather than my usual 'bend a string and see what happens' approach to solos. This worked well but was a bit tuneless.

So looking for recognisable melodies that will work over nothing but A. The main theme of the song ( Guns of Navarone) has 3 chords behind it and the guitar break should provide some respite from that being repeated by the sax anyway so not going to do that.

So,anything from Mary had a Little Lamb to Smoke on the Water considered if you think it will sound right over a static A chord and, possibly, played in a surf stylee.
    Relatively comical is fine!

Yankee Doodle will work over a static A (or any major chord, so long as it's not a dominant 7th)

In the key of A, the first 2 bars something like

    A A B C# A C# B E A A B C# A G#

then there's another two bars (similar)

For the the chorus though you'll need to change to the D, or you could just repeat the verse twice for your 8 bars, or play it in half time!

The Laurel & Hardy tune? (OK, works better if you can slip in the dominant in the relevant places, but as a throwaway you could live with it)

Any folk melody over a drone will work transposed into A. All Scotish/Irish bagpipe tunes etc...

I may have to go relisten to that although I don't recall it as one of his better efforts. I did see a German ska band on youtube who put in an Eruption style solo in there but I don't think that's me either!

I shall have a go at some suggestions and see what I can get to work.ta.
