    Default Quartal Harmony for Guitar

I have written an article on quartal harmony with examples of chord voicings. If you are not sure what quartal harmony is it may be worth a look.

By learning this you will get more sex, thinner, more attractive, richer and ultimately better at life! This is a guarantee or you will get your money back for this free blog!

Check it out and let me know what you think!

That's great - instant Bill Frisell! I'd never thought of it this way, I like harmonising in 7ths and with quartal harmony you've basically (it seems to me) got 2 stacked 7ths.

Combining some of these patterns leads to some nice progressions, particularly if you drop out the first 4th and mix in a few m9 chords, e.g.

    x x 0 x
    x 6 1 x 3
    x 5 4 4 5
    2 5 x 3
    2 5 0 x
    1 x x 3

A quartal trick I use a lot is to take a voicing such as

    x
    3
    2
    2
    x
    x

    or

    3
    3
    2
    x
    x
    x

and play a familiar melody, using the highest of the notes in the chord as the melody note but including the other two, really spices up a chord melody passage, sounding out, yet nicely in.
